Things I wish the client side rich text editor did in the Notes client.

By Andrew Pollack on 10/07/2008 at 10:41 AM EDT

The more I write, the more I wish the classic editor in the Notes client would handle just a few more things in a reasonably intelligent way. Lately, these small annoyances have really compounded for me. Let me list a few here. If you agree, maybe someone at IBM who finds themselves in a role with some influence {*cough*edbrill*cough*} can pick up these and do something about it.

#1. Let me use the control key with the mouse to select more than one thing at a time, even if they're not connected. For example, I could select every other sentence or a few words used in places around the whole of the content. Once selected, I could change the attributes of all at once -- say to bold, highlight, or color them.

#2. Why can't I have a toolbar icon or drop down for text color? Is this hidden somewhere that I don't know about? Sure, I know I could use "Styles" for this -- but they apply to whole paragraphs and aren't very flexible. I have toolbar icons for bold and italic, for font and font size, but not color. Why is that?

#3. Please allow me to pre-select a list of fonts I most often use, and show those at the top of the list of fonts. Many users have hundreds of fonts installed, and the font picker is just terrible. If I had a "favorite fonts" set, it would be helpful. One alternative many apps use is to have a pre-selected list at the top based on all the fonts currently in use on that document. That would work well too.

There are many other things I'd like, but these small ones would sure go a long way.

Concerning #2, the color picker. In the past I've requested this to be
implemented right next to the font and point size selection areas of the status
bar. It could work just like it does in Word Pro.

I think your right on all three. The color and font things bug me all the
time. I also wonder why smart icons for Bold and Italics but not Underline
(although the shortcut key is natural for me now).

Speaking of the default tool bar, I don't know about R8 but as recently as R7,
the default SmartIcons on each context sensitive palette are a real mish-mash.
What is the world is the LotusScript debugger icon doing on the Universal
palette. Why are "Call Server" and "Hang Up" still on the Workspace palette.

I think the SmartIcons are important enough that we install a custom set of
palettes on every Notes client that is installed in our building.

I do that in spite of the fact that Nathan hates them. ; )
You want to share those?By Andrew Pollack on 10/07/2008 at 05:23 PM EDT
I'd love to have a set of smarticons that actually made sense as if someone put
some thought it them -- and I've never wanted it bad enough to take the time to
put thought into it.

go ask MBR how much time they spent on what should be on the default editor
icon bar ... more time than you or me or anyone else has ever thought about it.

The problem is there is no universal solution for everyone. we need a better
way to customize the toolbars and save them, manage them (policies) and push
them out to people

#1 isn't something I see come up that often for most people, but #2 is a must.
we lost all the status bar stuff with the move to eclipse/expeditor. I know MBR
has been pushing to get them back in, but they are quite a bit of work. So who
knows what that means.

#3 should work like word 2007 .. .show the font name's in their font and list
the most used fonts (and font's used in the open document) at the top.

The truth is, I haven't had much to say that was worthy of more than a basic social media post -- until today. For my current work, I was assigned a new laptop. It's a real powerhouse machine with 14 processor cores and 64 gigs of ram. It should be perfect for running my development environment in a virtual machine, but it wasn't. VirtualBox was barely starting, and no matter how many features I turned off, it could ......

Certainly it should have been addressed in the Trump, Obama, Bush, Clinton, Bush, and Reagan administrations -- all of which were well aware of the implications of a pandemic. This is not quite a scam because it's technically legal, but it's run very much like a scam. This company works with a few "clients" that have vast repositories of copyrighted images. The trolls do a reverse web search on those images looking for hits. When they find one on a site that looks like someone they can scare, they work it like ......
