Great new tiny wifi router, access point, bridge from DLINK

By Andrew Pollack on 01/19/2005 at 02:16 PM EST
Just got this one in. Its about the size of my business card, but range is pretty good. It does all things you would expect in a wifi router, or in a wifi access point, or in a wifi client (bridge). The thing is, it does all three. Even more, you switch between them with a small switch on the bottom, and each of the three modes has settings which are stored distinct from the others. Power can be supplied by either the provided block adapter (which can work at 120v or 240v -- well done) or from a mini cable that draws power from the USB port on your laptop for ultra portability. What's more, it comes with a travel case. If I look really hard for a flaw, it could be the lack of external antenna jack -- I didn't have any trouble with range, however, so clearly they've got a fairly good one built in.

Bravo, DLINK. Nice product.

what sort of range do you get?By Alan Bell on 01/19/2005 at 04:37 PM EST
My WiFi is basically used to go up one flight of stairs, a distance of about 6
meters in total, I have never really bothered to find out what it is capable
of.
Range is a funny thingBy Andrew Pollack on 01/20/2005 at 09:53 AM EST
With this little device, range is comperable to my trusty Linksys Wifi router
-- an 802.11b/g device -- possibly a bit better.

I've mounted an 8dbi gain omni on my laptop that flips out when I need it.
With that on my Orinoco Gold card I can almost always find an open wifi hotspot
using netstumbler within 5 minutes any any town or city.

At home, my wifi network is outside my primary firewall, so I've made it open
and public. My neighbors across the street and next door to the south are on
that network as well. I've put directional antennas in strategic spots on
their houses pointed to the Omni's on my router and connected those antenna s
to cheap wifi bridge devices. These then run via standard network cable to a
hub and they use this for their network connectivity. Its been 100% reliable
for over a year.

With me at 'sphere will be my normal gear (wifi card, antenna, netstumbler)
plus my new portable router, a high gain omni, and a high gain directional
antenna.
Great for extending the wireless cloud at the 'sphereBy dave on 01/20/2005 at 09:44 AM EST
I have one similar to this from ASUS. It's very handy, and portable. I'll be
taking mine along to Lotusphere to extended the wireless cloud at the Dolphin.
I'd be interested to hear your plansBy Andrew Pollack on 01/20/2005 at 09:48 AM EST
I'll be using some gear to do something similar at the Swan. Are you planning
to find an "edge" spot and set yours up as a repeater? It'd be interesting to
try find edge spots nearer to the outside of the buildings, or to windows and
see if we could repeat the signal to the main campus area between the
buildings. If so, its possible you could achieve LOS from many of the rooms.

The truth is, I haven't had much to say that was worthy of more than a basic social media post -- until today. For my current work, I was assigned a new laptop. It's a real powerhouse machine with 14 processor cores and 64 gigs of ram. It should be perfect for running my development environment in a virtual machine, but it wasn't. VirtualBox was barely starting, and no matter how many features I turned off, it could ......

Certainly it should have been addressed in the Trump, Obama, Bush, Clinton, Bush, and Reagan administrations -- all of which were well aware of the implications of a pandemic.
