Annoying as hell dialog boxes

By Andrew Pollack on 10/24/2006 at 10:11 AM EDT

Don't you hate dialog boxes that offer no option? Here's a new one that really pissed me off yesterday....

Notice that there is no option here. You cannot close the dialog box without using the "Finish" button. You cannot deselect the option to restart the computer. The dialog is "Modal" so it will not go away without you doing what it wants.

And it wasn't necessary, since I wasn't using the driver I'd updated. A simple warning telling me to reboot before I use the device would have been sufficient. Instead, it decided to assume it had priority over everything else I was doing.

Now, that is annoying. I guess you could use the task manager to break out,
but why would anyone put up that sort of dialog?

Actually, I once got a dialog quite similar and did use task manager to close
it... unfortunately, instead of the reboot being triggered by the Finish
button's click event, it was triggered by the form's close event. So instead of
being able to close cleanly out of my other applications (I guess I should have
paid more attention to the warning to do so beforehand, but they all say that
and most don't mean it), it still rebooted me automatically.
Unfortunately, the lack of professionality .....By Jens on 10/24/2006 at 12:59 PM EDT
.... is showing by such dialogboxes and their behaviour. I have really changed
my mood when seeing such boxes, as I think, saving my nerves is more precious
than anything else. That does not change the fact, that such boxes indicate a
lack of quality and are definately going into what I'll recommend to customers.

Here are some sensible rules for web site advertisingAn increasing number of websites are now detecting when users have ad-blocking enabled, and refuse to show content unless you "whitelist" their site (disable your ad-blocking for them). I think that is a fair decision on their part, it's how they pay for the site. However, if you want me (and many others) to white list your site, there are some rules you should follow. If you violate these rules, I won't whitelist your site, I'll just find content elsewhere. 1. The total space taken up by advertisements ......
