The End for this old Maple Tree

By Andrew Pollack on 04/23/2009 at 02:15 PM EDT

This tree on the side of the house -- right outside my office -- has being slowly declining since we did the addition several years ago. Today was the day to finally have it cut down.

I can see why it had to be done, but I always find this sort of tree-felling
desperately sad

Agreed. I'm not much of any environmentalist, but there is something primal
about a nice tree. I'd really be upset if one of the huge maples out front had
to come down.

This old tree was really in bad shape. Each year fewer and fewer of the
remaining limbs supported any leaves at all, and they tended to be small and
rangy.

I'm planning to plant something else -- probably two new trees on that side of
the house. I'm not sure what. I'm considering cherry trees, apple trees, or
maybe even a disease resistant Elm tree if the conditions are right and I can
get far enough away from the house.

Who knows, I should look into pear trees too. Pears were at one time much more
common than apples in nature, but they don't keep well in a barrel through a
long winter so humans had less interest in keeping them as domesticated farm
trees. I love pears.

I think that is a fair decision on their part, it's how they pay for the site. However, if you want me (and many others) to white list your site, there are some rules you should follow. If you violate these rules, I won't whitelist your site, I'll just find content elsewhere. 1. The total space taken up by advertisements ......
