Throwing Clay, Java, and Developments at the Fire Station

By Andrew Pollack on 05/21/2005 at 08:46 AM EDT

I have to finally admit that my new modeling clay is Java. I still don't buy into J2EE for building most applications, and I don't see the value in making standards an obsession for work being done within the application itself -- but having gotten comfortable working in Eclipse 3, that's become the place I go when I want to try some new idea out to see where it goes.

Lots of cool NCT programs this year are on the plate as a direct result.

On the fire department side, I was incredibly honored on Thursday when the Captain of my truck invited me to apply for the open position of Lieutenant on our engine (Engine 1). I don't know if I'll do it, as I'm not sure I'm really qualified for to lead people into a building yet -- but to be encouraged to do so was a really nice surprise. We're getting a new Engine 1 later this year, so there's going to be a lot of work getting it outfitted, broken in and put in service.

I'm using Java more and more now, and whilst I realy like it I'm finding J2ee a
big mountain I don't really need to climb yet. Too complex, I can usually do
want I want with less.

On the fire brigade department front, if you think people are ready to follow
you into a burning building then maybe you should take a chance and see if
you're ready.

My experience in the police service tells me that you never know how ready you
are until you called upon to do something new.

Thanks to the fantastic work by John Curtis and his team, the node.js integration with Domino is going to be getting a rich security model. What we know is that a user's authorizations will be respected through the node.js application to the Domino server -- including reader names, ACLs, Roles, and so on. The way ......

This piece of garbage is supposed to be a bearing. It carries the shaft which drives both stages of the auger. The shaft passes through the bearing (which is what bearings do) after the auger drive pulley as the shaft goes through the back (engine ......
