Olympics Coverage Chat Room - Will continue for the duration -- and a side question: Did the Mongolian Team have to breach the Great Wall to come play?

By Andrew Pollack on 08/12/2008 at 12:56 PM EDT

The skype based Olympics coverage chat room was reasonably cool last night. I'm going to leave it "Open" for the duration. Just follow the link here:

http://bit.ly/3A23oV

And you can join or leave at will. You do need skype, but that's free and quick. You do not have to exchange details with others in the chat. Its public. It seems to be most active during the East Coast Prime Time coverage on NBC, but since there are like fifty different channels and online streams feel free to us it whenever and however you want.

An interesting side discussion might be to decide of the Mongolian team had to actually cross the Great Wall of China to come play, and if so did they actually breach the wall first?

The Great Wall, except for the touristy parts near Beijing, is mostly rubble,
so I doubt "breaching" played any role in the Mongolian attendance at the
games. Besides, even the Mongolians (both Inner and Outer varieties) have
airplanes now. (It's true, I looked it up)

The referees are being unbelievebly biased towards the asian athletes. This is
more than obvious in the boxing. Chinese boxers get points for just about every
shot they throw while other boxers hit with clean shots and do not get any
points. It is simply unfair towards the other nations. Athletes have been
training for this for years to just go to china and get cheated.

Speaking of ignorance -- did you realize you were replying to a post written in
2008, during the summer olympics?

Did the Luge teams members walk the entire course before it was open to them to
look for dangerous poles, buildings, walls, concrete steps, trees, anything
that they could possibly smash into if they left the course at 90mph ? If they
did not, why not. Wouldn't OSHA safety require more than one group to check
out this course and other courses (down hill ski race course) to make sure the
athletics are as safe as possible. Who missed the steel post that killed the
Luge contestant? Is this another case of two many layers of departments not
wanting to step on another department's toes? How do we know there is not
another pole or whatever out they not protected but obvious to all that should
be taken care of?

My heart goes out to the family whose son was killed.

Here are some sensible rules for web site advertisingAn increasing number of websites are now detecting when users have ad-blocking enabled, and refuse to show content unless you "whitelist" their site (disable your ad-blocking for them). I think that is a fair decision on their part, it's how they pay for the site. However, if you want me (and many others) to white list your site, there are some rules you should follow. If you violate these rules, I won't whitelist your site, I'll just find content elsewhere. 1. The total space taken up by advertisements ......
