On June 22nd at about 10:30am there was a fire at a home in Cumberland. This time of day on a weekday, manpower is at a severe shortage. The initial response was very shorthanded but was able to hold the fire until more personnel arrived to finish the job. The house is still standing and damage was kept to a minimum.
I wasn't able to attend, as I was flying to DC at the time, but I do believe its fair to say I contributed. You've heard me talking about "Second Signal" over the last several months. Thanks to that system -- now fully operational in Cumberland -- we had at least five additional people on scene to help. This includes a Deputy Chief, a Captain, and a Lieutenant along with other firefighters.
Chief Small wrote me to say that "[the Deputy] was at Cumberland County Emergency Management in Windham at a meeting when he got the firetone text message. It took him a minute to get out of the meeting to head back once he realized we had a confirmed fire. He was able to get up to speed with what was going on so when he got there he could go right to work --- instead of having to converse with me with what had already been done."
Second Signal is almost ready for a public rollout. I can't tell you how excited I am about that.
