Does anyone need an FTP & SFTP server that can use your Domino Directory for authentication & configuration?

By Andrew Pollack on 04/21/2009 at 10:32 PM EDT

For a client project, I needed an FTP -- and preferably an SFTP -- server integrated into the web site. Of course it is possible to use the one built into IIS, or else use a linux server or some other solution. Instead, I found and tested one that gave us a lot more integration.

The Xlight FTP Server runs on just about any flavor of Windows, installs is a few seconds, and can be configured to run multiple virtual ftp and sftp servers. I've opted for the Professional version with the SFTP add on module, and the cost totals up to $190.

In just a few hours -- most of which was spent configuring Domino -- I was able to use the LDAP authentication built into the Professional version to use Domino users for authentication almost right out of the box. Just turn LDAP on for your Domino server and you're all set. Then you can get more advanced.

The Xlight FTP Server can be almost fully managed and configured through LDAP. That means if you add their extended LDAP schema attributes to Domino, you can control how your FTP and SFTP server behaves. Once I set it up, I was able to set specific FTP home folders for each user just by writing the path I wanted to a field on their person documents.

So, with the Xlight FTP Server, you have a fairly cheap, very full featured, and highly configurable solution that ties extremely well into your Lotus Domino directory services.

What more could you want?

Being from away, there are things I just hadn't had a chance to do that most Mainer's take for granted. This weekend, I got the chance to scratch a few of those off the list. These included going 'upta camp', being significantly north of Bangor, and spending a fair bit of time on a ......
    2. 02/10/2010Is anyone really considering a move to a hosted Exchange system?I got this press release today from someone I really should learn to just ignore -- but I couldn't help myself. I actually read it. What struck me as the most odd set of statements in it focused on the idea that small and medium businesses are migrating away from Notes and into hosted exchange environments. In other words, that the move for small business into the cloud was somehow based on ISV's hosting off-site Microsoft Exchange mail servers for people. I suppose there must be some out there. This one ......

Facebook's latest change brings the topic to mind, but it can happen to you with internal applications as well. There comes a time when users begin to have a personal stake in the design of a good application. Facebook makes a great example for when your users really own your application. Its user base is both extremely ......
